What inspired you to become a photographer?
I grew up in Alaska, and there's really 2 things to do up there; hike and ski, and skiing was definately my thing. I was involved in freestyle skiing which is jumps and flips and stuff, and part of that culture is if you didn't get it on video, you're lying about it, and so I started in the camera world by shooting photos and videos of my friends at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood AK.
Tell us about your first photo that really validated your interest as a photographer?
To be honest I really don't remember a first photo that caught me.. I started shooting when I was about 14 so it's pretty much always been a part of what I do.
What do you enjoy photographing the most?
Apart from work shooting houses, I really enjoy shooting high end architecture. Our business model is pretty volume based so we don't typically shoot anything over $5m day to day, but occasionally we run into a gorgeous home and shooting those is NEVER work.
What has been your proudest moment as a photographer?
To be honest, it was the day I realized I needed to hire someone to keep up with the demand. So many people say it's hard to make a living taking photos, so it was a huge accomplishment to know that not only would I be supporting myself, but also had the business to support an employee.
How do you feel photography has impacted the way you see the world?
Taking real estate photos has allowed me to meet thousands of different people in their homes and see so many different kinds of people and viewpoints! Fun to be able to meet a huge variety of new people every day, and I've learned a lot from conversations along the way.
What is your best photography related tip?
Focus on your customers wants and needs if you want to shoot full time. Many photographers make the mistake of trying to design a market for their product, rather than designing their product to fit the market.
Your photos look amazing, what’s your secret sauce when it comes to post processing?
Simple, process based and consistent - this really only applies to real estate though as everything is about consistency and efficiency within this volume based industry. We rely heavily on software to do the work for us.
Speaking of which, what's your post-processing workflow?
Our process starts in lightroom where lens corrections are applied and white balance corrected, then straight over to Photomatix where the software blends the photos with our presets. From there its final tweaks in lightroom. We use photomatix due to how consistent and high quality the results our with our presets - we really don't have to do much to the images once they are done in photomatix apart from minor color and vertical corrections.
What would you like for people to take away from your work?
My work is less about art, and more about building a real business and supporting my family. It's a huge blessing and responsibility to have the processes and systems ive put together help support many employees and their families.
What are some 'must-have' items in your camera bag?
Personally, I use an iPhone 11 to shoot photos for myself...don't kill me but I love the ease of use and constant availability. I wholeheartedly agree with the statement 'the best camera is the one you have with you' and my iphone is always with me. For work, I think a dang lens pen is the biggest must have - you wouldn't believe how dirty stuff gets without one!
If you were stuck on a deserted island, what is the ONE photography book you would want to have with you?
Yikes. I've only used youtube and forums for everything... so honestly I've never read a photo book. Can I choose my phone? haha

Path #1: Operate a “one person” business
For many people, this is a great way to start out. It’s a risk-free, low-pressure way to get your feet wet, while earning money doing something you enjoy.

Remember, in my first year I was able to earn roughly $60,000, without having to work full time, rent an office, hire employees, and so on.

Path #2: Operate a small business
For anyone interested in growing past the “one person” business phase, a great option is to grow into a small business.
You can hire a few employees, which allows you to service more clients — this translates into more income, while still keeping things relatively small, and keeping your overhead low.
Again, you may choose to stop at this point, comfortably serving a few clients and operating a small, low-pressure business. Or, you may choose to do what I did…
Path #3: Scale your business
Today, my small “side hustle” business is now a full fledged and growing operation, with over 1,000 clients, 15 employees and contractors, and over $1-million dollars in annual revenue.
The beautiful thing about having all of these options is that you don’t have to decide now — you can start from wherever you’re currently at, and grow it to whatever level you’re comfortable with.
Or maybe you’ll want to challenge yourself to get out of your comfort zone, and grow into a new one! Again, it’s all up to you. As a Real Estate Photography Pro, the sky’s the limit, and you get to choose.
One of my favorite things about Real Estate Photography is that anyone can do it.
It doesn’t matter if you’re already a professional photographer, a hobbyist, or even if you’ve never held a camera in your entire life — I can teach you how to do it and be successful at it.

I know this from personal experience. When I started my Real Estate Photography company, Norman & Young (Norman is my middle name, and Young is my brother’s middle name), it was just a side business I started…by accident!
I was only 17 at the time, and I was planning to go to college. I thought the only way to make a good income in this world was to get a four-year degree, so that’s what I was working towards.
My plan was to become a doctor. But I started questioning that plan because almost every doctor I talked to told me they wouldn’t do it over again, if they had the choice.
They said it “wasn’t what they expected,” that they didn’t enjoy it, AND it took them $500,000 or more in student loans, plus an entire decade of school, to start making a decent income.
That was pretty sobering — can you imagine going into debt for half a million dollars, and spending an entire decade going to school, only to regret your decision once you finally started working? I’d hate to be a patient one of those disgruntled doctors is about to operate on!
Luckily, right before I went off to college, I was asked if I could take some photos of a house that was listed for sale — and being a teenager in need of money, I said yes.
I was far from a professional photographer, and I ended up making every mistake you could make when photographing real estate, but I still made $50. Not bad for a kid who had no experience!
But I was hardly prepared for what would happen next…
It wasn’t long before word got around, and more and more real estate agents were hiring me to photograph their property listings.
By the end of my first full year, I’d made over $100,000. Since that’s more than many college professors themselves earn, I decided to pursue my Real Estate Photography business, instead of a college degree.
That turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I could have stopped there if I wanted to. Making six-figures photographing houses was already an amazing way to make a living.
